ちょこっと解説：カニエ・ウェストと大自然で過ごしたワイルドな３日間（ニューヨークタイムズ紙記事より）

本日（７月１日）付，ニューヨークタイムズ紙WEEKEND MUSIC欄に，大きく一面（いや，２頁にわたる２面！）を飾ったのはカニエ・ウェスト。１頁目には「Into the wild with Kanye（カニエと共に大自然へ）」と題して，２頁目には「Three Days in the wild with Kanye（カニエと大自然で過ごしたワイルドな３日間）」と題して，２頁をフルに使って掲載された。

記事にはカニエが写っている写真が５つ，掲載されている。

ワイオミング州の山奥で開催された，アルバム『ye』のリスニングパーティーの模様。ウェスト夫人＝キム・カーダシアンや娘のノースとともに写った写真。ライブ模様。トランプ大統領とのツーショット等だ。

さて，この長文記事を２頁にわたって書いたのはJon Caramanicaというニューヨークタイムズ紙専属の音楽評論家ジャーナリストであるが，なかなかうまい具合に記事をまとめている。

記事の内容は，まず，今年４月中頃に始まったカニエがアップした一連のツイートに始まり，カニエのアルバム『ye』がリリースされるまでのドラマをイチから説明してくれている。「事の始まり」としてのカニエの入院の原因等，私生活も説明している。自殺を考えたいきさつや，人の目を気にし過ぎていた日々，自由を感じられず，束縛されていた日々など，カニエの精神状態について，なかなかうまくまとめている。

さて，写真にもあるワイオミング州ジャクソン・ホールの山奥で開かれたリスニング・パーティーである。

これだけのヒップホップアーティストが一度にワイオミング州の山奥に集合したのは，前代未聞ではなかろうか。カニエ，プッシャＴ，キッド・カディはもとより，コンセクエンス，スウィズ・ビーツ，０７０シェイク，２チェインズ（ペットの犬まで！），タイ・ダラー・サイン，ＤＪグレッグ・ストリート，デザイナー，サイハイ・ザ・プリンス，エイサップ・ナスト，リル・ヤッティー・・・so on and so forth。

みんなでキャンプファイアーを囲んでのリスニング・パーティーになったという。（↓こんな感じ）

本記事にはカニエとのインタヴュー内容も掲載されている。

トランプ大統領支持について，こう答えている。

質問：But if he says something like he doesn’t want to let Muslims into the country, do you like the way that sounds?
（もしトランプ大統領が「イスラム教徒はこれ以上，アメリカへ入国させない」なんていうことを言えば，それを支持しますか？）

カニエ：No, I don’t agree with all of his policies.
（いや，ヤツの政策全てを支持するワケじゃない。）

そして，「奴隷は選択だ」発言について，こう答えている。

質問：To clarify, do you believe that slavery in this country was a choice?
（確認ですが，この国にあった奴隷制度は，ほんとうに選択できたものだと思いますか？）

カニエ：Well, I never said that.
（いや，そういうことを言ったんじゃない。）
カニエ：I said the idea of sitting in something for 400 years sounds – sounds – like a choice to me, I never said it’s a choice. I never said slavery itself – like being shackles in chains – was a choice.

そして，この記事から学べる一番大事なことはこれなんじゃないかと思う。

カニエは言う。

We need to be able to be in situations where you can be irresponsible. That’s one of the great privileges of an artist. An artist should be irresponsible in a way – a 3-year-old.

補足：ちょうど昨年の今頃（2017年6月30日）であったが，ジェイＺが『４：４４』をリリースした際，ボーナストラックとして後日，アルバムに収録された楽曲「MaNyfaCedGod」で，ジェイＺはこうラップした。

傷が入った品は，新品よりも価値がある／それを金繕いと言う。

金繕い（金継ぎ）とは，割れや欠け，ヒビなどの陶磁器の破損部分を漆によって接着し，金などの金属粉で装飾して仕上げる修復技法をいう。まさに「新品」とは異なった趣（おもむき）をその芸術作品に感じることができる。（つまり，新品の作品と，ヒビ割れを修復したあとの作品とを較べたとき，ヒビ割れ後の作品のほうが，深い味を感じられる，ということだ。）

これをカニエに繋げるとすれば，新品のカニエと，精神的な傷跡によってできた「割れ」や「ヒビ」などを経てきたカニエ（まさに今のカニエ）とでは，後者のほうが，深い味を鑑賞することができる，といった具合だ。

ジェイＺが言う「kintsukuroi」を，カニエは「vintage Hermes bag」と表現した。この今となっては「疎遠のブラザー同士」は，ほんとうに似たようなことを考える“兄弟”である。

ちょこっと解説：ザ・カーターズ『Everything Is Love』論評記事

６月１８日付ニューヨークタイムズ紙Culture欄にビヨンセ＆ジェイＺ改めザ・カーターズのニューアルバム『Everything Is Love』についての論評が掲載されていた。概ね良好のレヴューであり，ビヨンセ及びジェイＺのリリックがところどころで引用されていた。

本記事に引用されていた，ジェイＺの歌詞を３箇所掲載することにする。

“I said no to the Super Bowl /
You need me, I don’t need you”
（スーパーボウル出演は断った／
俺に出て欲しいって？　俺はお断り）（訳：J.N.，以下同様）

“Time to remind me I’m black again, huh?”
（俺が黒人であることを，また意識させてくれたな）

“I’m good on any M.L.K. Boulevard.”
（キング牧師の名のストリートなら，どこでも俺はお似合いさ）

こうしてジェイＺの歌詞が世界中で流通しているニューヨークタイムズの記事に掲載されているわけである。ニューヨークタイムズは日本ではジャパンタイムズ紙に挟まれて（セット発行されて）販売されている。同様に他国海外でもその国の英字紙にセット発行されて販売・流通されている。こうしてジェイＺの歌詞は音楽を媒介としてだけではなく，世界中のビジネスマンやサラリーマンがコンビニや書店，待合室等で置かれているこの新聞を媒介として，流通されているわけだ。

ジェイＺはそのむかし，コカインやクラックを流通させて“ハスラー”として名を挙げたわけであるが，彼は今こうして，世界で最も古い印刷物である「新聞」という媒体をとおして，歌の言葉（ライム）を流通させている。

むかしから，ジェイは「流通」にこだわった。だからconscious（意識が高い）なラップを避けてきた。コンシャスすぎるラップは売れにくいからだ。２００３年リリースの名作『The Black Album』収録の楽曲「Moment of Clarity」でジェイＺは，こうラップした。

“I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollars /
They criticized me for it, yet they all yell “holla” /
If skills sold, truth be told, I’d probably be lyrically Talib Kweli /
Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense /
But I did 5 mill’ – I ain’t been rhyming like Common since!”

（観客にもっとウケる曲を作るため，歌詞のレベルを低めてラップしてきた／
それを批判するヤツもいれば，それにノッてくるヤツもいる／

「流通」をさせるため，一方でウケる歌詞と，他方でタリブ・クウェリやコモンのようにコンシャスな歌詞とを，織り交ぜて，ラップしてきた。そのバランスがジェイの場合は特段に巧かった。ずば抜けていた。

今回，”Apeshit”では，フランスはパリのルーブル美術館でミュージックビデオを撮影している。正真正銘のモナリザ絵画の正面で。

ルーブル美術館で舞う黒人のダンサーたちが，白人を主とする西洋の美術や彫刻に囲まれて踊っているところが，なんともいえず美しい。これも「黒」と「白」のバランスか。

これがまさにキング牧師が夢見ていたことか。

６月１６日（土）にビヨンセとジェイＺ夫婦（名付けてThe Carters）のコラボレーション・アルバム『Everything Is Love』がTidal上でリリースされてから，カニエ・プロダクションによる一連の７トラック・アルバムは落ち着きを見せはじめた。

しかし，ザ・カーターズが『Everything Is Love』をリリースしたのは，Nasが『Nasir』をリリースしたまさに翌日。そこで注目は一気にNasからザ・カーターズへとシフトしていったわけであるが，あえてここで，Nasにスポットライトを当ててみたいと思う。

アルバム『Nasir』からすでに名曲と揶揄されている楽曲⑤『everything』（feat. The-Dream）より，Nas自身のヴァースである以下を引用してみたい。

“When the media slings mud, we use it to build huts /
Irrefutable facts, merciful, beautiful black”

「マスコミが泥を投げてくれば，その泥で仮小屋を作り上げてきた／
まぎれもない事実，なさけ深く，美しい“ブラック”」（訳：J.N.）

このようにNasは，今までカニエ・ウェストがリリースしてきたプッシャＴやカニエ自身のようにドレイクに対してサブ・ディスを投げかけたりすることなく，黒人としての強さを表現している。Nasのライムにはこのような「強さ」を常に感じる。Nasがデビューしたのは１９９４年のことであるが，あれから２４年経た今も，アンダードッグとしての「強さ」を感じる。他方でジェイＺのラップ内容は時期を経て，変わってきた。ハスラー時代からコーナーオフィス時代を経て，リッチ時代，そして今やルーブル美術館でＭＶを撮影するほどのアート時代。しかし，それとは対をなしてNasのライムには２４年前に聴いた「強さ」をいまだに感じることができる。

ザ・カーターズの『Everything Is Love』も素晴らしいが，Nasの『NASIR』も同じくらい聴いていくこととしたい。
