このコーナーでは，カニエ・ウェストが人の曲にヴァース（歌詞）を提供している曲を紹介します。

今回紹介する曲は２００４年６月にリリースされた，スラム・ヴィレッジ（Slum Village）の「Selfish」という曲です。先日亡くなった「ソウルの女王」ことアレサ・フランクリンの「Call Me」ネタをサンプリングに使った曲です。プロデュースはカニエ・ウェスト。

カニエ・ウェストがプロデューサーとして，アレサ・フランクリンの曲を元ネタにしているヒップホップ曲は多いですね。これこそアレサ・フランクリンに捧げる，至極のリスペクトですね。

その曲から，カニエ・ウェストのヴァース（一節）を紹介します。

ちょこっと解説：カニエ・ウェストと大自然で過ごしたワイルドな３日間（ニューヨークタイムズ紙記事より）

本日（７月１日）付，ニューヨークタイムズ紙WEEKEND MUSIC欄に，大きく一面（いや，２頁にわたる２面！）を飾ったのはカニエ・ウェスト。１頁目には「Into the wild with Kanye（カニエと共に大自然へ）」と題して，２頁目には「Three Days in the wild with Kanye（カニエと大自然で過ごしたワイルドな３日間）」と題して，２頁をフルに使って掲載された。

記事にはカニエが写っている写真が５つ，掲載されている。

ワイオミング州の山奥で開催された，アルバム『ye』のリスニングパーティーの模様。ウェスト夫人＝キム・カーダシアンや娘のノースとともに写った写真。ライブ模様。トランプ大統領とのツーショット等だ。

さて，この長文記事を２頁にわたって書いたのはJon Caramanicaというニューヨークタイムズ紙専属の音楽評論家ジャーナリストであるが，なかなかうまい具合に記事をまとめている。

記事の内容は，まず，今年４月中頃に始まったカニエがアップした一連のツイートに始まり，カニエのアルバム『ye』がリリースされるまでのドラマをイチから説明してくれている。「事の始まり」としてのカニエの入院の原因等，私生活も説明している。自殺を考えたいきさつや，人の目を気にし過ぎていた日々，自由を感じられず，束縛されていた日々など，カニエの精神状態について，なかなかうまくまとめている。

さて，写真にもあるワイオミング州ジャクソン・ホールの山奥で開かれたリスニング・パーティーである。

これだけのヒップホップアーティストが一度にワイオミング州の山奥に集合したのは，前代未聞ではなかろうか。カニエ，プッシャＴ，キッド・カディはもとより，コンセクエンス，スウィズ・ビーツ，０７０シェイク，２チェインズ（ペットの犬まで！），タイ・ダラー・サイン，ＤＪグレッグ・ストリート，デザイナー，サイハイ・ザ・プリンス，エイサップ・ナスト，リル・ヤッティー・・・so on and so forth。

みんなでキャンプファイアーを囲んでのリスニング・パーティーになったという。（↓こんな感じ）

本記事にはカニエとのインタヴュー内容も掲載されている。

トランプ大統領支持について，こう答えている。

質問：But if he says something like he doesn’t want to let Muslims into the country, do you like the way that sounds?
（もしトランプ大統領が「イスラム教徒はこれ以上，アメリカへ入国させない」なんていうことを言えば，それを支持しますか？）

カニエ：No, I don’t agree with all of his policies.
（いや，ヤツの政策全てを支持するワケじゃない。）

そして，「奴隷は選択だ」発言について，こう答えている。

質問：To clarify, do you believe that slavery in this country was a choice?
（確認ですが，この国にあった奴隷制度は，ほんとうに選択できたものだと思いますか？）

カニエ：Well, I never said that.
（いや，そういうことを言ったんじゃない。）
カニエ：I said the idea of sitting in something for 400 years sounds – sounds – like a choice to me, I never said it’s a choice. I never said slavery itself – like being shackles in chains – was a choice.
（言ったのは，４００年の時を経ても，奴隷制度がまだ続いていたっていうのを考えた時，それは人々が「あえて」廃止しようとしなかったから，って思えたんだ。奴隷そのもの，例えば両足を鎖に繋がれたりしていたことが選択だ，とは一度も言っていない。）

そして，この記事から学べる一番大事なことはこれなんじゃないかと思う。

カニエは言う。

We need to be able to be in situations where you can be irresponsible. That’s one of the great privileges of an artist. An artist should be irresponsible in a way – a 3-year-old.

（時に，自分が無責任になれる状況に身を置かなきゃいけない。それがアーティストとしての素晴らしき特権である。本来アーティストは無責任でなければいけない，ある意味，３歳児だと思って。）

記事の最後に，記者はこう締めくくる。

“Getting comfortable with the dissonance, that’s the thing.”
（不調和音を安心して受け入れられるようになること，それがカニエを理解することの第一歩である。）

カニエはこう言う。

“My existence is selvage denim at this point, it’s a vintage Hermes bag. All the stains just make it better.”

補足：ちょうど昨年の今頃（2017年6月30日）であったが，ジェイＺが『４：４４』をリリースした際，ボーナストラックとして後日，アルバムに収録された楽曲「MaNyfaCedGod」で，ジェイＺはこうラップした。

Broken is better than new / That’s Kintsukuroi.

傷が入った品は，新品よりも価値がある／それを金繕いと言う。

金繕い（金継ぎ）とは，割れや欠け，ヒビなどの陶磁器の破損部分を漆によって接着し，金などの金属粉で装飾して仕上げる修復技法をいう。まさに「新品」とは異なった趣（おもむき）をその芸術作品に感じることができる。（つまり，新品の作品と，ヒビ割れを修復したあとの作品とを較べたとき，ヒビ割れ後の作品のほうが，深い味を感じられる，ということだ。）

これをカニエに繋げるとすれば，新品のカニエと，精神的な傷跡によってできた「割れ」や「ヒビ」などを経てきたカニエ（まさに今のカニエ）とでは，後者のほうが，深い味を鑑賞することができる，といった具合だ。

ジェイＺが言う「kintsukuroi」を，カニエは「vintage Hermes bag」と表現した。この今となっては「疎遠のブラザー同士」は，ほんとうに似たようなことを考える“兄弟”である。
